Automattic announced it is in talks with OpenAI and Midjourney for an AI deal. With this deal, user data from WordPress users will feed into training data for LLMs at these AI companies, among others. WordPress has announced that it will not share the data of its paying WordPress VIP users.

Word came out recently that Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, is in talks with OpenAI and Midjourney to share end-user data. AI developers want to use this specific data to train their AI models. The Tumblr social media platform is also involved, writes 404 Media.

WordPress CEO Gernert responds

WordPress CEO Nick Gernert provides more insight into the deal in a blog post on addressing potential resentment about handing over this data to AI companies. More specifically, by doing this he is trying to appease WordPress VIP level users. This tier exists primarily for business users.

Gernert notes that Automattic will not provide data from this user group to OpenAI and Midjourney. He also states that data from these specific customers will never be shared without express consent.

It is not known what data AI companies plan to extract from the platforms. The WordPress CEO only mentions that VIP customers of WordPress are safe, but he says nothing about the countless users of open source WordPress.org or the fully hosted version of WordPress.com. Data from these end-user groups may therefore be shared with OpenAI and Midjourney.

In his blog, Gernert also notes that data crawling and deletion by AI developers (public or online) is common these days. According to him, users should get advice from reliable organizations if it doesn't work for them.
